My name is Jill, and I am 23 years old. I have had migraines for the past seven years of my life. At first, I got migraines a few times a month, and this gradually increased to a few times a week. One major trigger of my migraines was severe neck pain that would gradually travel up into my head. Sometimes, my neck would hurt for weeks at a time. I tried a variety of prescription and over the counter medications to control the pain. The prescription medicine had side effects, and I often would have to spend the whole day in bed. Twice I went to a med center and had to be given injections of pain medications because my migraines were so severe. As time went on, my neck pain became so bad that I couldn’t even sleep on my left side. I would wake up through out the night with neck, back or hip pain, all at the age of 23! My regular doctor told me there was nothing wrong with my neck. I then went to a chiropractor for 3 months. The treatments were painful and just quick fixes. I once even made an emergency appointment with the chiropractor while I had a migraine, and he did his treatment and claimed that I was better. I drove home still with a migraine and took my prescription medication. At work, when I would get a migraine, I would have to rest in the break room with the lights off while my coworkers tiptoed around me. I finally decided I was tired of the pain controlling my life and went to physical therapy. Nephew Physical Therapy is just down the street from me, and after I checked out the website, I decided to give it a try. When I went to my first appointment, I worried that Melissa would tell me that nothing was wrong with my neck. It was such a relief to finally have someone tell me that there was in fact a reason for my pain! In fact, I was surprised to find out that the neck pain was the end result of my hips, rib cage, shoulders, etc all being out of place. One of the greatest challenges for me was realizing that this wasn’t going to be another quick fix and that sometimes I would have to take a step back to move forward. Melissa asked me every visit how I was doing and kept track of my progress to keep me motivated to continue my exercises both during physical therapy and at home. Within a few weeks of therapy, my neck felt so much better and my migraines were decreasing. After three months of physical therapy, I now can sleep through the night, even on my left side if I want to! I can work a whole day without a migraine, and I have drastically cut down the amount of medication I am taking. Now, in the rare times my hip or neck bothers me, I have exercises I can do at home to help alleviate the problem. I used to walk around with a cloud of worry about when a migraine might sidetrack me from life, but now I no longer have this stress. I thought that I would just live with the pain for the rest of my life, but now I can actually act like I am 23 years old. Jill B
